Emergencies can develop quickly. Fires, medical incidents, evacuations and other critical events require workers to act calmly and follow the workplace emergency plan.
Workplace Emergency Preparedness gives workers practical knowledge to help them respond safely when something goes wrong.
First, learners examine common workplace emergencies and how they may arise. Next, they learn how alarms, emergency communications and evacuation procedures guide the workplace response.
The course explains the roles of workers, wardens, first aiders and emergency services. Also, it shows workers how to support these people without placing themselves or others at greater risk.
During an evacuation, workers must follow instructions, use the correct exit and proceed to the nominated assembly point. Likewise, they must remain at the assembly point until the person in charge gives further instructions.
However, emergency preparedness involves more than knowing where the exits are. Workers must understand the emergency arrangements for their own workplace.
For example, they need to know:
- How the workplace raises an alarm
- Who holds emergency roles
- Where to find emergency exits
- Where to assemble after an evacuation
- How to report an emergency
- How to assist people who may need help
- When to contact emergency services
In addition, workers need to take emergency drills seriously. Drills allow everyone to practise the correct response and identify problems with the emergency plan.
Finally, workers must follow the instructions of emergency wardens and emergency services. They should never re-enter an evacuated area until the person controlling the emergency confirms that they may return.
Every worker plays a part in workplace emergency preparedness. As a result, clear procedures, regular practice and calm decisions can reduce confusion and protect lives.
