Safe Operation and Inspection of Pallet Racking

Course Information

Pallet racking failures rarely occur without warning. Damage, incorrect loads, unauthorised changes and poor inspection practices can all weaken a racking system.

Therefore, workers and supervisors need to understand how to use, inspect and report pallet racking safely.

Safe Operation and Inspection of Pallet Racking gives warehouse workers and supervisors practical knowledge for managing racking risks in Australian workplaces.

First, learners examine how pallet racking systems work and why correct configuration matters. For example, moving beams or changing load arrangements can affect the capacity and stability of the system.

Next, the course explains safe loading practices, load limits and racking signs. Then, learners examine common causes of damage, including forklift impacts, overloaded beams, unstable pallets and missing components.

Also, the course shows learners how to recognise visible warning signs. These signs may include bent uprights, damaged beams, loose anchor bolts, missing safety clips, cracked welds or excessive beam deflection.

In addition, learners explore the different responsibilities involved in racking safety. Workers must report impacts and visible damage promptly. Meanwhile, supervisors must respond to reports and follow the workplace inspection process.

If someone identifies unsafe racking, workers must not ignore it or continue loading it. Instead, the workplace must follow its reporting, isolation and escalation procedures. A competent person must then assess the damage and determine the appropriate action.

Finally, learners consider the importance of routine visual checks and formal inspections. Regular inspections help workplaces find problems before they lead to falling goods, structural failure or serious injury.

This course supports practical risk management under applicable Australian WHS and OHS laws. However, it does not qualify a learner to repair, alter or certify a pallet racking system.

The course takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

What You’ll Learn

  • How pallet racking systems operate
  • How to follow load limits and racking signs
  • Common causes of racking damage and failure
  • How to recognise visible damage and warning signs
  • Routine inspection and reporting responsibilities
  • What to do after a forklift or pallet impacts racking
  • How to respond when racking appears damaged or unsafe
  • When to escalate concerns to a competent person

Clear. Practical. Built for real warehouses.

Overall, this course gives learners the knowledge to identify problems early, report concerns and support safer warehouse operations.
