Slips, trips and falls can cause serious workplace injuries. Often, everyday hazards such as spills, clutter and uneven surfaces create the risk.
For example, poor lighting can hide a change in floor level. Loose cords, damaged flooring and unsuitable footwear can also contribute to an incident.
Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls gives workers and employers practical guidance for controlling these common risks.
First, learners examine how slips, trips and falls occur. Next, they explore hazards in walkways, work areas, entrances, stairs and access points.
Then, the course explains how housekeeping and maintenance can prevent incidents. Clean floors, clear walkways and suitable storage help people move safely through the workplace.
Also, learners consider environmental conditions such as rain, glare and poor lighting. These conditions can change throughout the day and create new hazards.
In addition, the course examines the role of flooring, footwear and signage. Suitable footwear can improve traction. However, footwear cannot compensate for an unsafe floor or unmanaged spill.
Warning signs can alert people to a temporary hazard. However, a warning sign does not remove the hazard. Therefore, the workplace must clean, repair or isolate the affected area as soon as possible.
Workers also play an important role. They should report hazards promptly and follow workplace procedures. Meanwhile, employers and managers must respond to reports and maintain safe access through the workplace.
