Safe Cash Handling

Course Information

Practical Safety for Australian Workplaces

Handling cash is a routine workplace task, but it can create real safety risks when businesses poorly manage systems, layouts or work practices. Theft, robbery, aggression and stress can all create foreseeable risks in workplaces where employees handle cash.

Safe Cash Handling provides workers and supervisors with clear, practical guidance on handling cash safely and confidently. The course focuses on everyday retail, hospitality and customer-facing environments where employees regularly receive, store or transfer cash.

Importantly, safe cash handling relies on good systems rather than individual bravery. Workers learn how risks can arise during cash handling tasks and how workplace controls can reduce the likelihood of incidents.

In addition, the course covers practical procedures for handling and storing cash. Workers learn why businesses may use controls such as limiting accessible cash, maintaining secure storage, following opening and closing procedures and reducing unnecessary exposure during cash transfers.

Managing Cash Handling Risks

Safe systems of work can help reduce opportunities for theft, robbery and aggressive behaviour. For example, workplaces can establish clear procedures for cash storage, transfers, reporting and responding to incidents.

However, workers also need to know what to do when a situation begins to escalate. Personal safety must take priority over protecting cash or property. The course therefore reinforces safe responses, de-escalation principles and the importance of following workplace emergency procedures.

Responding to Cash-Related Incidents

Workers should understand how to report incidents and access support following a cash-related event. As a result, employees can respond consistently while employers receive the information they need to review controls and manage workplace risks.

This training also supports broader workplace health and safety responsibilities by helping workers recognise hazards, follow established procedures and raise safety concerns.

Finally, this course takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
